What are block associations and resident associations?
An association of residents of a particular area who work together to maintain a safe and attractive neighborhood.
Block associations and resident associations:
- bring together neighbors who share common issues
- give neighbors a collective voice to call for change
- build community by encouraging neighbors to get to know one another, to look out for one another, and to take the initiative to make change
How do I start a block association or resident association?
Consider the following five steps to start your block or resident association:
- Outreach to your Neighbors
- Organize a first Meeting
- Hold Nominations
- Hold Elections
- Develop Your Bylaws
Your bylaws should include information on:
- Membership dues
- Officer descriptions
- Election protocol
- Decision-making
- Meeting protocol
- Communication
- Finances
- Bylaw modification
Once you have organized your new association, please provide the Community Board office and your Precinct Community Affairs Unit with a list of officers, addresses and telephone numbers
