OPEN STREETS ON LEWIS AVENUE
WHEN IS THE EVENT?
The program is scheduled to occur between 12pm and 6pm on eight Saturdays in June, July, and August this year. This excludes the holiday weekends of Juneteenth and July 4th. There will be NO Open Streets during inclement weather. Tentative full dates are as follows:
June – 6/4 ; 6/11 ; 6/25
July – 7/9 ; 7/16 ; 7/23 ; 7/30
August – 8/6
Allowing for through-traffic at each intersection, the first barricade will be placed at the southern crosswalk of Hancock Street. The Open Street will end at the Northern crosswalk of Decatur Street. Two street closures at the Charles C. Pinn triangle on Fulton will stop through-traffic. Traffic from Bainbridge will be able to travel on to Lewis Avenue to get back on to Decatur Street.
PLANS FOR SANITATION
Along with purchasing extra garbage bins for the blocks, BSDC has contracted additional supplemental sanitation services to remove potential waste generated at these events. Extra garbage cans will be provided by Council Member Chi Osse’s office. We are working with NYC Department of Sanitation to change dates of pick-up.
PLANS FOR SAFETY
BSDC, NYPD’s 81st Precinct, and DOT will provide guidance and support for traffic control at each intersection. Additional staff will be provided to monitor barricades and offer extra security during Open Streets. A 15 foot safety lane for emergency vehicles and Access-A-Ride down the extent of Lewis Avenue will be available. FDNY 214/Ladder 111 will not be affected by the street closures.
NOISE AND VENDORS
Limited live music and performances will be allowed at the Lewis Avenue Open Streets. Only those vendors affiliated with Lewis Avenue merchants will be allowed to sell on Open Streets; similarly, food and alcohol vendors must be connected with food and alcohol merchants. Illegal vendors will be asked to leave. Residents of Lewis Avenue will be permitted to sell goods from their stoops!
Join us in helping to make Open Streets on Lewis Avenue a successful and safe open space for the entire family. Thanks in advance for your support!
