Start a block association or resident association

What are block associations and resident associations?

An association of residents of a particular area who work together to maintain a safe and attractive neighborhood.

Block associations and resident associations:

  • bring together neighbors who share common issues
  • give neighbors a collective voice to call for change
  • build community by encouraging neighbors to get to know one another, to look out for one another, and to take the initiative to make change

How do I start a block association or resident association?

Consider the following five steps to start your block or resident association:

  • Outreach to your Neighbors
  • Organize a first Meeting
  • Hold Nominations
  • Hold Elections
  • Develop Your Bylaws

Your bylaws should include information on:

  • Membership dues
  • Officer descriptions
  • Election protocol
  • Decision-making
  • Meeting protocol
  • Communication
  • Finances
  • Bylaw modification

Once you have organized your new association, please provide the Community Board office and your Precinct Community Affairs Unit with a list of officers, addresses and telephone numbers
