A Stitch in Time, Laced With Love

The Stitch in Time club at the Bridge Street Development Corporation's Quincy Senior Residence gave birth to an innovative idea to help the city, and infused special meaning for Mother's Day, last month.

The active, very gifted seniors knitted handmade heirloom blankets and caps for newborns — stepping in for a recently cut NYC baby blanket program.  On hand to accept the heirlooms was Ericka Moore (far right), Site Director, Newborn Home Visiting Program, NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene.  "This donation was made with love," said Ms. Moor.  "And the love that initiated the creation of the items transferred to the families that received them."

The DOHMH offers a single home visit to all families with a new infant to help them adjust to parenthood, assure their infants are living in safe a environment, provide topic-specific education and identify health and social issues that require referral to community based services.
